Achievements

Teaching and Learning

i.      There has been a reduction of time between University Exams and display and submission of students exam results. We were able to graduate our students during the October 2006 graduation - previously we were graduating mop - up cases in the October convocation.

ii.     Review of the Curricula for both BA(SS) and B (SWSA) which are now due for endorsement by the relevant University organs

iii    We have run workshops for methodology and theory for graduate program students with the support from Sida/SAREC.

Research

The Faculty is involved in several internationally funded research projects in the areas of HIV/AIDS, STIs, Poverty Alleviation, Land Use Management, Malaria, Food Security, Good Governance and Conflict Conciliation. There are two Faculty- wide research programmes: Sida/SAREC programme and the Norwegian government support for Good Governance. Funders include OSSREA, I@mak.com.VicRes, Sida/SAREC, WHO, SOMANET, AICAD, HASNET/RENEWAL, INIBAP, NORAD, Dutch Government, NUFU and Makerere University. The Faculty has published widely in all fields details of these can be found on the Faculty Web site. Departments within the School of social sciences are engaged in several research programs.

The Department of Sociology continues to play a significant role in research on emergent diseases and on food security and livelihood issues. A number of members of staff are publishing in this regard.

The Department of SWSA is also engaged in block fieldwork project in both state and non-state organizations.

 The Department of Women and Gender Studies is involved in several locally and  internationally funded research projects in the areas of: ICT, Public Policy,    Gender Relations, Reproductive Health, Refugees, Decentralization and child labour funded by IDRC, Sida /SAREC, OSSREA, I@Mak.com. They have also recently won a NUFU research and training grant.

  The Department of Political Science and Public Administration attracted funding for a three-year project on Democratization in Uganda from the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and is also working with the Christian Michaelson Institute.

Outreach

In the area of outreach, the Departments have been engaged in new and on - going outreach activities during the year, including: 

v     Formulation of Community-Based Wetland Management Plans in Wakiso District under the Wetlands Inspection Division.

v     Three I@Mak.com projects at full implementation stage. One is headed by Ms Florence Asiimwe another by Dr. Robert Kabumbuli and the third by Assoc. Prof Murindwa Rutanga.

v     The Department of Sociology is the coordination center for the voluntary student internships in the School of social sciences in several districts with funds from I@mak.com.

v     The Department of Sociology continues to coordinate the community policing initiative and several members are as well, members of community, NGOs and School Management Communities.

v     Development of the National integrated monitoring and Evaluation System (NIMES) for both the Uganda and Rwanda governments.

v      The development of the new National Strategic Plan for HIV/AIDS for Uganda.

v     Members of staff have been involved in the development of government policies including: the Health related Policies, Land Policy, the revised Poverty Eradication Action Plan (PEAP) and the National Gender Policy.

v     The Department of Women and Gender Studies has various tele-centres in Iganga, Kanungu and Mbale district that help in training people in networking.

v     Members of staff have interacted with the Parliament, the Nile Basin Initiative, served as External Examiners in different Universities and Institutions, are on Academic Boards, charity organizations and carry out consultancies. 

v      Since 2004 members of the Faculty deliver guest lectures each year to the UPDF Senior Command and Staff College at Kimaka, Jinja.

v     The Faculty with the help of NORAD funds has been able to host members on radio talk shows on different topics concerning Good Governance.

v     Students' Internship Programme recognized by I@Mak.com as the best organized Faculty.

    6.4   Infrastructure

      The Faculty has managed to furnish its Board room for small meetings. The Faculty has also saved Shs.240m for infrastructure development. 

6.5   ICT

      A new computer lab for students has been furnished and is operational.

6.6   Organisation and Management

The Faculty has continued to support students organizations and those students with  disabilities.
