The main role of the Department to date has been teaching, research, community outreach, and acting as a servicing Department to other Departments' or Faculties' programmes. Teaching in the Department has particular reference to the circumstances and problems of contemporary African societies and cultures. One of the assumptions on which the Department's mission is based is that development planning and problem solving is both an intellectual and practical exercise to which sociologists and social anthropologists, as well as other social scientists, have important contributions to make.
As part of its community outreach, the Department particularly emphasizes the need to develop partnerships beyond government institutions that have been the traditional recipients of our graduates. These partnerships to-date involve engaging in research with implementing agencies, both local and international, as well as training for the Institutions' capacity building
